Health Ministry

This ministry provides a new dimension in pastoral care, focusing on the inter-relatedness of physical and spiritual needs. This program, developed by health care professionals in our parish community, provides opportunities for pastoral visits, education forums, consultation, and resource referral.

What is the purpose of the Health Ministry?
The purpose of the Health Ministry is 'To promote health of mind, body, and spirit within the context of the Christian faith by providing education and support for our church community.'

Who is involved in this?
Two registered nurses, along with the Pastoral Associate, form the core of the Health Ministry.

Is this the same as Parish Nursing?
This ministry developed from the concept of Parish Nursing, a popular and widely growing field combining nursing knowledge and health care with our Christian faith and practice. Parish nurses utilize their medical skills to care for the whole person - mind, body and spirit. But we have chosen the broader term of Health Ministry to allow for other options of utilizing health care professionals in caring for the overall health of our parish community.

Will nursing care be provided?
There will be no 'hands on' nursing care. Neither home health care nor invasive nursing procedures will be provided.

What are the roles of the Health Ministry nurses?

  • As a health educator. The Health Ministry nurses assess the needs of the parish and then facilitate educational programs utilizing qualified instructors.
  • For health monitoring and screening. The Health Ministry nurses offer monthly blood pressure screenings after services on the first Sunday of the month.
  • As a referral source. The Health Ministry nurses act as liaisons for community health resources.
  • As a health advocate to support and empower individuals dealing with health issues, including making pastoral visits when needed.
  • As a health consultant for staff, youth leaders, and parishioners.
  • Further information may be obtained by contacting the Health Ministry Coordinator or the Pastoral Associate.
